Framers` market vs Veggi Box (home delivered)

farmers market

A few weeks ago I decided to try out Mgarr Farms, a company where you can purchase vegetables & fruit of local produce and delivered to your house.  You can purchase either individual items or a box.  In the past, I had used the services of another company for a box of vegetables to be delivered to my house.

Though the produce used to be very fresh, I used to feel that there was not enough for our family.  I decided to give it again a try but this time with Mgarr Farms.  I opted for the Veggie box which costs Eur20.  You can opt to buy items individually and not what comes in the box.  Produce was fresh although one of the clementines was going bad.  However, I still get the feeling that there is not enough – maybe it’s because I don’t get to choose the produce myself.  Delivery was on time and this is what you get:

  • 5 bananas;
  • 500gr tomatoes round;
  • 800gr oranges for juice;
  • 1 cauliflower;
  • 1 broccoli;
  • 4 apples;
  • 4 clementines;
  • Spring onions;
  • 500gr carrots;
  •  250gr mushrooms;
  •  2 courgette;
  • potatoes;
  • 3 onions;
  • mint;
  • basil

I decided to go to the Farmers’ market to see how much I spend if I get the same amount (or almost) of produce.  The scope was to compare like with like, but from the Farmers` Market ended buy some different items.  At the Farmers` market I spent approximately Eur15.50 and from the vegetable van spent a further Eur8.50.  This is what I bought:

Farmers` Market (Eur15.50)

  • 300 gr (approx)Mushrooms;
  • 1 Broccoli;
  • 1 large Cauliflower;
  • 1 kg potatoes;
  • 4 onions;
  • 2 courgettes;
  • 7 tomatoes;
  • 4 pomegranates;
  • Parsley

Vegetable van (Spent Eur8.50)

  • 4 Clementines
  • 4 Apples;
  • 9 Bananas;
  • 1 Pineapple

As far as quality and freshness both a good.  In both instances I got items that were starting to go bad.  Even when you choose products yourself you still might miss that one item going bad.  As you can see from the picture of the Farmers` Market the cauliflower is humangous and did by items that were different from the ones bought from Mgarr Farms.

I must say that the Pineapple according to Mgarr Farms website costs Eur2.50 whilst I bought mine Eur3 and was not that exceptional.  Will definitely give Mgarr Farms another try but next time will not order the Veggi box but choose the vegetables/fruits and quantities myself.
