Most Common Organisational Mistakes

Having an organised home does save time, gives a sense of calmness and it could be aesthetically pleasing, only IF it is WELL ORGANISED.  Everything seems to look well organised if there isn’t visual clutter, but there are a few mistakes that would hinder the functionality of your space.  Here are the most common mistakes:

1. Neatly stacked clutter

Just because your paperwork, books or magazines are neatly stacked does not mean it is organised.  Take action, file your paperwork, put on a shelf your books or donate them.  Same thing applies to magazines.

2. Cleaning supplies organised in one place

If you have multiple bathrooms, then it makes more sense to have bathroom cleaning products in each bathroom.  Your general cleaning products, should be stored in a cleaning caddy.  If you have extra cleaning supplies then of course place them in one place by category.

3. Clear countertops

We all have seen pinterest and Instagram photos were the kitchen countertops are free from any gadgets.  Sometimes you need to choose functionality over aesthetics…if you use a gadget everyday…multiple times a day, then it would make more sense leaving it on your kitchen countertop.

4. Too many organisers

The intentions are good, but if you don’t have a plan for each organiser, then those organisers would become clutter.

5. Wardrobe / Walk-in closets that don’t work

If you wardrobe / walk-in closet is well organised it makes getting ready in the morning faster.  How should it be well organised? It has to fit your lifestyle and needs.  It doesn’t mean that whatever you see on social media works for you.  It does not make sense to place not so used clothes at the front just for the sack of having it color coded.

6. Confusing clean with organised

Ideally a clean and organised space go together, but in reality one does not necessarily indicate the other.  It is very common that a clean home, is cluttered and disorganised and vice versa.  However an organised home (free of clutter) makes it easier to keep clean.

7. Procrastination

Once your home is organised, it does not mean that you don’t do anything on a daily basis.  You need to maintain it.  Therefore don’t procrastinate and put away things immediately.  Decluttering on a regular basis is key in order not to accumulate clutter.
