6 Tips to organize kids bedrooms

Whether you are redesigning your kids bedroom or just need to give it a fresh, the month of August can be the right time to start this organizational project. With Back to School round the corner (even if done online), it is the perfect opportunity to go through your kids room and get it organized and cleaned.

Here are some tips how to organize the kids bedroom.

1. Involve your Kids

Remember….this is your kids room, not yours.  The room has to cater for the needs of your kids, so it is important that you involve them not only by asking them how they would like their room to be but also by involving them in the process.  When kids, help out, they feel in charge of the situation and are more likely to keep the room tidy and clean.  Involving your children in the decluttering process, will help them learn how to let go of things.

2. Don't overdo it

Trying to finish the task in one day will feel overwhelming, so split the project on a number of day.  Be realistic and keep your tasks short.  Going through your kids stuff and deciding what stays and what goes can be a lengthy process.

3. Organizing Clothes

Take an inventory of your kids clothes and the best way to do so is to take everything out.  Look at the clothes and immediately disregard those that have visible stains (that cannot be cleaned) and are torn.  The next step is for your kids to try on the clothes, to make sure they fit property.

Those that pass the fitting test should go back into the closet, whilst the others should go either into the donation bin or trash bin.

Take not of any clothes that need to be bought.

When it comes to organizing your kids clothing, organize by type of clothing that makes sense for your child.  Store out of season clothes separately.

4. Use Bins & Baskets

Kids can collect anything under the sun, so it is important to have those small collections under control.  Making use of bins & baskets can easily help your child organize such collections or even small toys.  Label everything to make it even easier to put things where they belong.

Install shelves to display larger collections.

5. Create designated spaces

Create designated spaces for your child’s needs.  Have an area where your kids arts and crafts can be displayed.  Have you considered setting up a reading corner?

We all know that kids come home with art and crafts and it is important to display such artifacts (for a limited time).  A simple way to display your kids art is to hand a thread on the wall and use pegs to hang the art works.  Keep only recent ones on display….dispose or store the rest.

Having a reading corner is just as equally important.  Such a space will encourage your child to choosing their own books but also know where they should go once read.  Implement a book rotation system to make the space more interesting.

6. Consider different types of storage

Think outside the box!!!

Consider different storage solutions, go vertical and make use of space under the bed.  Always keep in mind that this is a kids room, so make sure that it is child friendly and anything that your child uses on a regular basis should be stored within their reach.

It is important that in order to keep your child’s bedroom organized is to declutter and assess your child’s interests on a regular basis.
