Organizing your kids bedrooms

Organizing Kids Bedroom

Do you feel your kids bedrooms are always a mess and cluttered?  Do you feel overwhelmed every time you open the door? Let’s improve that and make your child’s room a place they can enjoy and you can spent quality time with them.

The key is how to organize your kids bedrooms. Creating an organization system that is simple is important to get your kids onboard.  Kids don’t fully understand the concept of being organized, therefore you need loads of patience and also you need to lower your expectations.

1. Before organizing let's talk furniture

I am no interior designor…but if you are in the initial stages of doing your child’s room (or redecorating), design a space that will last for years.  Keep it simple and neutral.

Cartoon character beds are adorable but kids grow up fast and it would not be suitable for your growing child.

Keep it simple and allow space for play.  Remember that the room has to cater for their age, therefore consider easy access to hooks, bins and books.

2. Organizing the room

No matter how small the room is, start off be planning out the zones in your child’s room.  The idea behind creating zones, is to have a designated area for everything such as a reading zone, homework zone, play zone, clothing zone etc.

Don’t be afraid to involve your children in the design and organizing of their rooms.  Ask them questions such as How would you like your room to look like? What would make it easier to keep it clean and organized?

An important element is choosing the right storage solution for the room.  Remember to keep it simple, because if your child is looking for a particular toy and does not find it, the likelihood is that s/he will dump everything on the floor.

Be careful when choosing a storage system for toys.  Go for something that is long lasting. When choosing bins, avoid (depending on the item) lids, because lids can be a hindrance for children to put back their toys.  However, if you are choosing something with a lid, then opt for transparent boxes, so your child can see what is inside.

Each bin needs to have a specific purpose for example red cars or small cars or doll clothes.

Always carry out regular decluttering sessions of toys.

Even more importantly is to label each container.  If your child is still too young to read, then include  a picture, so they can associate the word to the picture.

Keep books in the reading zone…no need to keep all the books in the same room.  Even if you children don’t know how to read yet, keep them within their reach.

Having a minimum supply of arts & crafts supply is always handy for a rainy day.  Split the supplies according to whether the items can be used under your supervision (such as glitter) or can be used by your child without supervision.

The arts & crafts supplies would be in the howework zone, therefore it implies that you would require a desk.  If a desk is not possible in your child’s room then place your arts & crafts supplies in the vicinity of where more likely to be used.

  • Clothes

Obviously every bedroom would have a wardrobe and drawers.  Organize clothes according to season, because it is not unheard of that kids would want to wear winter clothes during the summer months.

Label the drawers, so your child knows where to find their clothes and allows your child to be independent.
