Declutter your life

Definition of clutter: “to fill something in an untidy or badly organised way”.

Clutter distracts you from the important things in life.  Imagine having a wall full of paintings all next to each other – it is very likely that you would be unable to focus on one painting, your eyes will be drawn towards many.

It is in the human nature, to collect things. We collect things for various reasons – either for sentimental value or out of a passion and want to surround ourselves with things that we love.  Others, just bring things in their lives, hoping that one day they will use it.  Let’s be realistic, if you haven’t used something in the past year, it is very unlikely that you will use it in the future.

Getting rid of clutter, does not mean throwing everything away and going minimalist.  Having a collection stored in boxes in your spare bedroom, defeats the whole purpose of having a collection and will only create clutter in your life.  Once you declutter, you would be able to display your collection in an orderly manner and enjoy it.

Do not try and declutter your whole house in a day, you will be overwhelmed .

  1. Start slowly – tackle one drawer at a time;
  2. Take everything out – you will make a mess but it will make you understand the extent of the situation;
  3.  Sort into 3 categories – keep, donate and throw away;
  4. Make sure that whatever needs to be donated and thrown away is taken out of the house as soon as possible;
  5. Start organizing.

Decluttering has to be an ongoing process, as inevitably we bring stuff into our homes on a regular basis – especially if you have kids. As long as you are disciplined and keep only those items which truly make you happy and need, then you can control it.

Do not procrastinate and start today…..it will make you feel better.
