Tips to become more Organized

tips to get organized

A very common comment I get is how organized I am. Being organized comes easier to some, but for others it’s hard to actually be organized.  However, introducing some small habits in your daily routine will set you for success.

But what does being “more organized” mean?

  • Knowing where everything you need is;
  • Being on time;
  • Being prepared;
  • Feeling in control of your day
Here are some habits you should embrace to get you more organized:

Write things down

We all know that someone, who remembers every birthday, anniversary and sends cards and wishes for every occasion.  Though some people might have good memory, however relying solely on memory will not get you more organized.  How do they do it then?  They write things down.

Whether you use the traditional pen and paper or an app on your phone, writing things down helps you remember things, whether it’s birthdays, shopping lists for groceries, home decor and other important dates such as doctor’s appointments and school meetings.

If you are more of a pen and paper person, invest in a good planner or calendar.  Personally I had designed my own planner to cater for my needs, however there are many planners and calendars on the market:

Busy Days Planner

Busy Days planner

A planner that is flexible and offers space for your daily schedule.  Page can be removed and add more to your liking by using the adequate puncher.

The Family Calendar by Box Clever Press which compliments the Busy Days Planner.  This calendar offers a large space to write and comes with stickers.

ERIN CONDRIN PLANNER

Another good planner is the Erin Condrin.   It is stylish and you will definitely enjoy planning your days.

The Happy Planner is another planner that makes planning easier for you and at the same time makes it fun.

Make Schedules and Deadlines

Being organized and productive go hand in hand.  Whether you are a stay at home parent or work outside the home having a schedule and keeping to it helps you stay organized and focused.

There is no need to plan your day minute by minute however you can block parts of the day.  For example if you are a mum that works outside the home, you know that during your office hours your time is dedicated to office work.  However,  when at home block batches of time to get things done such as 2hrs for homework, 1 hr for tidying up, 2 hrs for dinner preparation and dinner time and so on and so forth.  During those hours don’t put anything that does not pertain to that time.

Set goals, whether it’s decluttering your home, planning a holiday.  Whatever it is write down your goals and what you need to do to achieve those goals.

Don't Procrastinate

The more you wait to do something, the more difficult it will be to get it done.  Get things done.  Procrastination, is the main culprit for disorganized & cluttered homes.  We get things in our homes constantly, but we don’t take out things  at the same rate.

We all know that you need to organize the junk drawer or the kitchen but you keep procrastinating.  There are 3 options: either you put that effort and do, or get a professional home organizer (so you can start afresh) or you keep postponing.

Everything has a home

Organized people sort things properly and label their storage spaces.  Things have a home and therefore it makes it easier to keep organized.

Apply the ‘one arm rule’ – when organizing a space, as much as possible make sure that to grab an item your arm makes only one movement, because it is more likely to put it away.

Remember everyone’s organizing style is different, so make sure you find what works for your and your family.

Declutter Regularly

Decluttering on a regular basis is crucial to keep you on top of things.   Find time each week to declutter a space…..write it down in your schedule.  Having less clutter reduces stress and saves money.

Keep what you need and what you love.  The more stuff you have, the more clutter it is likely that you have.

By following the above tips, will help you to get organized, however you need to be committed.  Start with steps that you are in control of.
