Back to School on a Budget

It’s August and at this stage we don’t know the dynamics of the next scholastic year (post-COVID 19), I am sure that kids will be given some form of tuition whether it’s online or physically at school.  Whatever the case, you would still need to buy books and some stationery.

Am sure that many of you have received your stationery and book list.  Will you be leaving your purchases for the last minute or have you already started planning?

If you have a set budget, then it’s best to start planning in advance and start shopping as early as possible.  There is no need to buy everything at one go, but you can plan your purchases better.  When you plan, you can assess the condition of the items you already have and decide what exactly you need to buy.

1. Have an updated list

In order to save some money, check what you can reuse from the previous year and cross off your list.  Maybe you still have  plastic copybook covers, copybooks and other extra stationery items from previous year.  Make sure your list is up to date, and that is readily available should you come across a bargain.

2. Buy 2nd Hand books

Now more than ever 2nd hand books would be a bargain.  Books that were meant to be used in the 2nd and 3rd semester would have been barely used….almost new.  Start early looking for books.  What you don’t find you can then buy new, but you will definitely save some money.

3. Start Early

Starting early will help you price match from various shops.  If you start early, you would avoid feeling the pressure of having to buy an item and is out of your budget.  Inevitably there might be last minute purchases, but do not let that be the rule.

4. Splurge on what matters

We all know, that children will inevitably lose stationery during the scholastic year.    Therefore it is important to spend money on good quality labels.  I love the labels from Stuck on You, they have resisted the test of time whether it’s the bag tags, labels or the iron on labels.  Stuck on You not only offers labels, but lunchboxes, pencils, bottles and much more.

Staying on budget can be pretty tough especially with all the school supplies required, however always take not of how much you spent and add at least 10% for the following year (so you can plan your budget).  As far as uniforms is concerned, always buy them slightly larger so some items can last a couple of years.

Love,
