How to Organize a Small Space

How to organize a small space

Space can be like money, it is never enough.  However if you organize you space wisely you can organize all the things that you enjoy.  Everything needs to have a home, in order to stay on top of things.  Sometimes, we tend to forget where things go, so labeling is key to keep organized.  Here are some tips on how to organize a small space:

1. USE WALL MOUNTED HOOKS OR OVER THE DOOR HANGERS

If you don’t have a coat closet, that it is important to invest a wall mounted hook or over the door hangers.  This does not take much space and keeps your jackets organized and not laying around on chairs.

2. USE LAZY SUSAN & MAKE USE OF VERTICAL SPACE

Lazy susans are a great way to reach awkward spaces and deep cabinets, but also to organize your condiments in the kitchen.  Lazy susans can practically be used anywhere in the house.   Use vertical space that otherwise would be wasted by making use of shelf risers or even for example by storing your cups and saucers on top of each other (using the saucer as a base).

3. CHOOSE FURNITURE WISELY

Nowadays, one can find different kinds of furniture, so it is important that if you are looking to replace furniture or furnishing your new home to choose furniture that has storage.  Choose beds and sofas that have storage underneath. This is extra space where you can store your not so frequently used items.  You can store quilts and out of season clothes under the bed.  However, if you are not looking to replace your bed, but still have space under the bed, you can use it to store large toys (click here to watch my YouTube video on how to organize toys) or to store clothes in containers.

4. USE A MEDICINE CABINET WITH STORAGE FOR SMALL BATHROOMS

If you have a small bathroom, then double your medicine cabinet to serve as a mirror as well.  You can use the storage inside to store other toiletry items.

5. FOLD INTELLIGENTLY TO MAXIMISE SPACE

Many of us are used to folding t-shirts and putting them on top of each other.  However, if you want a t-shirt at the bottom, it is likely that the rest will fall.  Who has time to put them back in place if you are in a rush?  However, if you fold them to get them into a rectangle and store them in a line like a filing system you will save space and are able to see what you have.  When you take one out, the rest will stay put.  In my video How to Fold Kids Clothes I explain how to fold and store clothes which can be applied to adult clothes.

6. USE YOUR LUGGAGE

When you are not travelling, you can use your luggage to store extra pillows, quilts or other travelling gear that would otherwise take more space.

When the surfaces of your home are cluttered, the space looks smaller, therefore it is very important that you put things away immediately.  Those few extra minutes, will save you much more time in the long run.  Having a place for everything will definitely help in keeping clutter at bay.
