Choosing Summer School

In three months` time kids will be out of school for their summer holidays and for us working parents it can be a logistical nightmare.  The majority of us have already started gathering information and seeking recommendations for summer schools and other fun activities to occupy the kids.  Sometimes, as parents we might go overboard in trying to fill our kids days as much as possible (from morning till evening) adding pressure on ourselves.

Sometimes, I think it’s beneficial for kids to get bored.  They are enticed to use their imagination, and seek innovative ways to pass their time.  You can create the bored jar……just write down some fun activities  and when you child is bored, s/he picks one and does it.  Remember, sometimes the most fun games do not cost money…..from an empty box children can create all sorts of pretend play……let their imagination run wild.

Anyway, I am diverting…..back to choosing a summer school……

Do summer schools really cater for us working parents? Personally, I think it all depends on your working hours….if you work from 0800hrs – 1700hrs, then few summer schools cater for your needs.

So what should you look for when choosing summer school as a working parent?

  1. Opening hours and if it fits your work schedule;
  2. When does it start once school finishes;
  3. How long has the summer school been open;
  4. The program being offered is adequate to your child’s age;
  5. Are the carers qualified and have a nurse or someone qualified in first aid on a regular basis;
  6. General environment;
  7. Cost.

Finding what fits your needs can be quite daunting at times, especially if it’s your first time. As a working parent, be prepare to compromise on some aspects because of your working hours.  Private summer schools offer extended hours, but I believe very few offer extended hours till 1700hrs.   SkolaSajf, however does cover the hours up until 1700hrs which can be an option for the working parent.

At the end of the day, you have to see what suits your family needs.  Despite, some places might be recommended more than others, it does not mean that your experience will be a positive one.  It depends a lot on your child’s taste and experience during summer school.

Good luck with the search:)
