Tips to Decorate your Christmas Tree

Christmas Trees nowadays come in different shapes and forms.  Some come pre-lit which saves a bit of time, whilst others require minimal decoration.  It really all depends on your style.

Today will be sharing some tips on how to choose your Christmas Tree and how to decorate it to have a designer finished look.

Choosing your Christmas Tree

When buying your Christmas Tree take into consideration the area where it is going to be set up.  It might seem obvious, but remember that in the shop they will seem small (and all very beautiful) and you might get carried away with the enthusiasm and buy a tree that is too large for your space.

Taking into consideration, what style would you like to decorate your home and what other decorations you already have.  Would you like a Winter Wonderland look then go for a white flocked tree or do you prefer a more classical look?

Choose a theme and color

Choosing a theme for your Christmas tree and a color scheme makes it easy to shop for your Christmas decor.  I recommend you go for two color schemes and opt for different sizes and shapes.

Choosing ribbon and garlands

Personally I am not a big fan of tinsel, I am more a ribbon kind of person.  Good quality ribbon will make a difference to your tree…..for my Christmas tree I opted for gold wired ribbon.  Why wired?  It allows you to shape it how you want making it easy to manouver.

Lights

Unless you have a pre-lit Christmas tree, lights are truly make the difference. Honestly you cannot have enough lights 🙂  It is recommended that for every one foot you have 100 lights. For my Christmas tree I opted for warm white lights and leave them still (not flickering).

Start decorating

Now that you have all your decorations, ribbon and lights you can start decorating and here is the process:-

  • Start from the top and move yourself down;
  • Christmas tree topper – I know most of you put the Christmas tree topper last but actually you should put it up first.  The reason being that, once you put all your decorations up, going on a ladder or chair to put up the topper would risk knocking something down;
  • Lights – tuck them into the tree as much as possible so the light would be coming out from the tree;
  • Ribbon – let your ribbon flow.  You could wrap your tree with the ribbon, go vertical with the ribbon or else cut pieces of ribbon and place in strategic areas.  An important tip is to tuck the ribbon into the Christmas tree to create a natural feeling.  Secure the ribbon with tree branches;
  • Decorations – For my Christmas tree I not only use baubles but also flowers and sprigs.  If you do the same, place the flowers where your ribbon tucks into the Christmas tree, it hides the twisted branches.  Sprigs will fill in those areas which need to look fuller.
  • Baubles –  Use different sized baubles and decorations to create interest.  If you have some decorations that have seen better times don’t throw them away but use them inside the tree (towards the centre)….that way you create depth and interest to your tree.    Start decorating from top to bottom….at the top use smaller decorations, increasing the size as you go towards the bottom.
  • Christmas tree skirt – you have now decorated the Christmas tree but don’t forget to  legs.  Use a skirt or drapery to hide those ugly Christmas tree legs.

Every time you find a section, take a step back and look at it from afar and adjust accordingly.

Now put on some Christmas music and decorate your tree!!!
