2020 The year the world stood still

2020 the year the world stood still

Who would have imagined on 31st December 2019, whilst toasting Happy New Year that a few months later we would have seen deserted streets and squares all over the world. Who would have imagined that 2020 was going to be the year where the world stand still?!  We were full of hope and plans, until a few weeks and months later our lives changed.

It all started from Wuhan, China and COVID-19 was declared a pandemic in March 2020 by the World Health Organization.   It spread throughout Europe and reached the United States of America – almost no country has been spared.  COVID-19 does not have any boarders, does not care about ethnicity, sex or age. It moves from one country to another silently.

We are fighting a war, but we are unable to see the enemy but yet we know it is there.  A microscopic virus, that hides inside our bodies sometimes without us knowing.  We are our own enemies as  inadvertently we can be carriers of the virus and that can be lethal to the most vulnerable of our society.

We have and are still seeing countries mourning their loved ones, numbers that they have never experienced before.  Even more heartbreaking is the inability to give a decent burial ceremony.  The majority of those infected recover from COVID-19, but it takes times.  It is a period of isolation and solitude for these patients, so never underestimate the virus.  Health Authorities and hospitals are at extremes, exhausted and faced with hard decisions.  Governments are trying to save what is left of an economy that has crumbled like a tower of cards.  We have to support each other and unite in such difficult circumstances and not try and make a profit out of the desperation of the population.

A virus, that has attacked the core of human beings.  It is in our nature to interact and socialize but this virus prohibits us from doing so.  The only way to eradicate it from the population is by physical distancing from each other.  We are staying away from our loved ones, but we can still remain in contact through the means of technology.

Despite the numbers and the appeals of the Health Authorities, there is a part of the population that thinks it is invisible.    We still see people going out and that’s not OK.  Personally, I don’t think it is ok to go out, not even in remote places.   I might be an extremist but I take no chance. I like many, have small children, and since the schools have closed, they have not gone out except to the rooftop.  We stay home and go out only to buy the necessities such as pharmacy and grocery (and only once a week if absolutely necessary as most of grocery shopping is being done online).  Let’s take the opportunity, and enjoy quality time with our family.

The world will change once this is over, because it will be over.  We will change. We have learnt to slow down.  The world needed a break from human beings, it needed to heal from the damage we were doing.   Once this is over, let’s not take everything for granted, let’s take care of the earth and appreciate the little things in life.

2020 and the pandemic will be in the history books as the year the world stood still.

In the meantime, STAY HOME because that is the only cure.

Love,
