8 Common Organizing Mistakes

8 common organizational mistakes

Have you tried getting organized, but you find yourself searching for a new system over and over again?  If yes, then you might be making some of these organizational mistakes , that are making it difficult to maintain the organizational system.

I have been there myself, so don’t despair!!!

#Organiational Mistake No 1: Moving stuff around instead of decluttering

I am guilty of this!

When I don’t know what to do with an item I move it to somewhere else.

We all know that you cann’t organize clutter.

The solution to this is to remove clutter.  Decluttering can be hard and overwhelming.  Make conscious decisions.  Donate or sell items that you no longer use or love.  If you would like to know how to make decluttering easy read the blog post Decluttering made easy.

#Organizational Mistake No 2: Buying Containers First

Containers are an important part of any organisation project, but purchasing containers before you actually start the organizing process is a big mistake.   Reason being, that whilst decluttering you might find containers that would fit perfectly for your project.

Until you have decluttered and started the organization process, it is difficult to identify the right containers.

Buying containers, that you will not be using will inevitably cause clutter.

#Organizational Mistake No 3: Comparing your home to that of others

One can easily fall into this vicious circle of comparing ones home and organization challenges to that of others.  There is nothing wrong to seek organizational tips and ideas especially when we live in the era of Pinterest.  However, everyone’s organizational journey is at a different stage.  Remember that everyone’s home and lifestyle is different.

ORGANIZING NOT A ONE SIZE FITS ALL.  A good organizational system has to fit your needs and not vice versa.

#Organizational Mistake No 4: Feeling overwhelmed by the mess created mid-way

Per se this might not be a mistake, but it can lead to a mistake.   Due to the fact that you feel overwhelmed you might give up and put back everything in a closet making it worst than before.

If you feel like doing it, think of it as progress.  Unless you do a mess you won’t get the project done.

Keep in mind that at least you’re organizing!

Ideally you create a sorting system by creating piles (Read Decluttering Made Easy blog post), will help you control the overwhelm at bay.  Focus on the decluttering process.

#Organizational Mistake No 5: Thinking that a container will solve all your organizational challenges

Containers play an important role in your organization project.  There is no perfect container, and the search for the perfect container.

The search can keep you paralazyed and prohibit you from starting the project.

When buying a container choose verstaile containers, that can be used for different organizational projects.

#Organizational Mistake No 6: Procrastinating

You wait for the perfect container! You wait for the perfect organizational system!

Don’t procrastinate and START!

Organizing is a journey.  If you don’t start you will never see progress.  After all it is not about perfection but about progress.

#Organizational Mistake No 7: Thinking it is a one time project

You organized, and the system is not working any more.  Organizing is an ongoing process and as your life changes, your organizational needs change.

The best organizational systems are the ones that are built through time, after having been used and adjusted accordingly.

Schedule some time to work on an organizing project.  It might be something you do once a month but keep it regular.

Remember that tidying up is not the same as organizing (Read the blog post Difference between decluttering, tidying up and organizing)

Organizing means that everything has a home.  The more you get into the habit of organizing, the more natural it will become.

#Organizational Mistake No 8: You are not asking for help

Asking for help can be hard, but there is nothing to be ashamed of. Truth is that it is not easy to stay organized or start an organizational project when you are juggling family and work.

Explain to your family the organizational systems you are working on and show them how they can help to maintain them.  Don’t expect your family to instantly know how to use the organizational systems set up.

It’s ok to ask a professional home organizer or a friend who is good at organizing to give you a helping hand.  Just ask!!!

Are you making any of the above organizational mistakes? Let me know in the comments.
