Your little baby is starting kindergarten in the next couple of weeks and it can be stressful both for your child and yourself.

In those weeks prior to the start of school, as a parent you have a whirlwind of emotions. Different emotions creep up. You are happy but on the other hand you feel, s/he is too small. You worry about how s/he would be able to go to the bathroom, whether your child would make friends.

Do not worry, you are not alone. We have all been through it.

There is no way to predict, your child’s reaction on the first day of school. Some might go in, wave goodbye and that it, whilst others would be petrified and cling to your feet. If your child, is more likely to cling to your feet, don’t worry, eventually your child will settle down. I know, it breaks your heart to see them like that….I have been through it….it will eventually be only a memory.

When my son started Kinder 1 last year, I thought that the transition would have been easy because:

  1. he had been attending childcare, so was used to having other children around him and;
  2. he was already used to the school environment since we used to pick up my daughter from Klabb 3-16.

I could not have been more wrong. When he came to enter the school, he just refused, making a scene. The following days were even worse. He would just refuse to go in – he cried, threw tantrums, you name it he did it.

As if the morning were not tough enough, despite being potty trained, he had a regression. Potty training is one of the major headaches for us parents. We feel that they are too young to attend to the bathroom by themselves. Don’t worry, they will manage.

The only thing you can do as a parent, is to prepare your child for their first day of school. Discuss kindergarten, show enthusiasm, but if your child does not show any interest do not force it on them.

If you think your child suffers from separation anxiety, try and leave them for a few hours with a relative. It will slowly build confidence, and they will soon realize that after a while you will be going back for them.

Don`t worry, you are not alone. It is just that some fake it better than others.

Wishing you all good luck!!!

Love
