Let’s Organize: the Bedroom

A few weeks back in my blog post about organization Organizing: Where to start? I stated that when starting to get organized, always start from the Bedroom.  Your bedroom should be your sanctuary, the place where you unwind after a busy day and not a place that stresses you out because it is cluttered and disorganized.

So here are some tips how to start organizing your bedroom:

  • Garbage therapy

As I mentioned, in my previous blog post, go round your bedroom and throw away random garbage that might have accumulated in your bedroom.

  • Bedroom belongings

Remove anything that does not belong to the bedroom.  Put the items that do not belong to the bedroom aside, until ready from the bedroom.  Once done reallocate the items to where they belong.

  • Floor

Pick up any clothes laying on the floor.  If they need to be washed, put in the laundry basket otherwise put them aside.

  • Your Clothes

I believe that most of you have heard about the Kon Mari Method  (About Kon Mari )of decluttering (by category not by location).  However, since we are in the bedroom, we can declutter clothes and she recommends that you take all your clothes and put them in a pile.  When you see your clothes all piled up, you realize the quantity you have and whether that amount is necessary.  Take each clothing item and if it ‘Sparks Joy’ you keep it, otherwise you donate it or throw away.  By ‘Spark Joy’ she means whether it makes you happy or not.  If it does not ‘Spark Joy’, according to the Kon Mari Method you thank the item for its service and let it go.

  • Putting back your clothes

Whether you have followed the Kon Mari Method or some other method to declutter your clothes, it is time to put them back.  Keep in mind that, the clothes being put back are the ones you love.becca-mchaffie-580884-unsplash

Take the time to put the clothes on the hanger, backwards.  As you wear the clothes put the hangers the right way.  After 6 months, check the hangers that have stayed backwards.  Those pieces can be purged, as you have not worn them (this does not apply if you have evening dresses that you wear on special occasions). If would recommend that you hang clothes according to category and color code them.  For example if you are doing dresses, start from long ones and move to shorter ones.

  • Organizing your drawers

Use dividers or baskets in your drawers.  I found that the best way to store clothing in drawers is the Kon Mari way of folding Kon Mari Folding Method.  This method of folding clothes allows clothes to stand vertically. Therefore when putting away clothes in a drawer you are filing them one after the other and not on top of each other.  This method allows you to see what t-shirts you have, without having to take everything out.

In the case of underwear, socks and other small items, it is recommendable to use dividers or baskets.  Gather like items together and place in separate baskets.

  • Identify Hot Spots

Night stands, chairs and dressers tend to be a hot spot.  Make sure to declutter these hot spots and try to get rid of as much items as possible.  If on you bedside table you like to keep a hand cream or other small items, contain them into a small basket….it will definitely look neater and organized.

  • Clean the room

Now that you have organized your clothes, drawers and decluttered the surface you are ready to wipe down surfaces, mirrors and wash the floors.

Look around you, open the drawers…..do you get a satisfying feeling that everything is clean, in its place and easy to find.  Now, just light a candle and relax in your hotel like bedroom.

Now that your bedroom is clean, you have to maintain it.  Going forward take that extra time to fold clothes properly and put everything where it belongs.  Every week, make a quick tidy up and declutter.  Once a month, tackle a bigger chore such as washing the curtains or the windows.

Whatever room you are doing, there is not need to do it all at one go.  Spending a few minutes everyday is enough.  Remember, as long as it is better than it was before, that is progress.
