Back to School season is here….we are already inundated by stationery shops with back to school supplies.  As soon as we are settled in the summer routine, here we are thinking again about another scholastic year.  The beginning of a new scholastic year can be very exciting and overwhelming.

For those parents, whose little ones are starting school for the very first time, this time of year can be very emotional.  Suddenly, we realize that they are growing fast and paving their way through independence.  Whatever your situation, back to school season is the right time to implement organizational systems for a stress-free scholastic year.   Here are some tips to prepare for back to school:

  1. Purchase stationery – most of the lists are given out on the last day of school, therefore the sooner you purchase stationery the less hassle you will have.  For young children make sure that all their stationery is labeled (for labels and other customization I love Stuck on You);
  2. Purchase books – again most of the lists are given out on the last day of school.  Make sure you order your books as soon as possible to avoid out of stock items.  I highly recommend using the bookstore coverage service – it saves a lot of time and frustration;
  3. Transport – If you plan to send children with transport make sure you make the necessary arrangements well in advance;
  4. Uniform – children grow up fast, so leave purchasing of uniforms to a few weeks before school starts.  Under the uniform category I include socks, tights and hair accessories for girls;
  5. Shoes – remember that your child’s feet are still growing and will be spending long hours in those same shoes so make sure they are comfortable. Good quality shoes is surely an investment;
  6. Lunch – check your lunch supplies, toss away anything which no longer serves its purpose.  Do invest in good quality lunch boxes (invest in containers to keep food warm in the winter months) and water bottles. Check out these Water Bottle Lunchbox
  7. School bag – inspect the school bag and replace if need be;
  8. Make a favorite foods ideas for lunches – this will help you during the scholastic year to make varied lunches for your child;
  9. Schedule children’s haircuts – after the summer months the hair might have got damaged so what better way to give it some strength then having a haircut;
  10. Set up a ‘Homework’ station – this will help you stay organized during the scholastic year.  Have a place where to put papers/consent forms/art work that come from school. Check out this Homework Organizer to keep school paperwork organized;
  11. 11. Begin transitioning back to school night routine – during the summer months the routines are not as rigid and children might be allowed to sleep later.  Transitioning back to the scholastic year routine can be difficult for children, therefore make sure to start a few weeks before.
