The ‘I’m Bored’ Jar

Summer holidays are here!! As a mum working outside the home, it does not really effect my morning routine, as I still have to wake up early and still need to prepare lunches. The only difference is that we do not have homework.

My working hours do not change, just because my children are on summer holidays. I have no family members who are able to take care of the children, whilst I am at work, so my best option, is for the kids to attend summer school. Notwithstanding, I try and make summer holidays as fun as possible.

Would I prefer to enjoy the summer with the kids? Definitely, but circumstance require that I require to work.

If I was a stay at home mum, would I still send my children to summer school? Probably yes, but with less hours.

Summer holidays, can be long therefore entertaining the kids can be quite a task. I find nothing wrong for kids to attend summer school if you are stay-at-home mum.

Despite, my kids days are occupied during the morning, I still hear the phrase ‘I am bored’. How do I prepare myself for the dreaded phrase?

  • SUMMER BUCKET LIST

Every summer, I prepare a bucket list of things we would like to do during the summer holidays. It can be anything, from having an ice-cream at the new coffee shop or make smores.

  • I’M BORED JAR

This is a very simple concept, just take a jar and some ice lollipops sticks (you can buy the colored ones like I did).

On each one, write an activity that children can do on either on their own or with minimal supervision. Whenever, they say I am bored, that pick a stick from the jar. My daughter, was not happy will all of them, as I did include things like – ‘do a chore of mum’s choice’ or ‘do a chore’

Our ‘I am bored’ activities

During those times when kids are bored, you need something quick. Having this ‘I am bored jar’, feels like a game because kids pick one and have to stick to it.

Pick one

Notwithstanding having an ‘I’m bored jar’, sometimes letting your kids get bored can be beneficial for their imagination.

Enjoy your holidays!!!
