If you have been following on social media, you know that during the month of March I have been sharing my journey of the Flylady cleaning method.  I don’t have a helper that comes to clean my house on a weekly basis, hence the reason why I wanted to find a way how to keep the house clean without getting overwhelmed.

 Since I had kids, I started struggling with keeping the house clean.  Previously, I used to dedicated one day a week and clean the entire house.  However, this was no longer been working out.  I did some research and stumbled into the Flylady and after trying it out for a few months, I must say  that it does work for me.

So what is it all about?  The Flylady divides the home into 5 zones and each week is dedicated to a particular zone.  Your focus for that particular week is on that zone.  However, prior to getting into the zone there are a few steps that need to be done.

Step 1 – Shine your Sink (Lesson 1 – Shine your Sink).

You are to start off by shining your sink.   Whatever the state of your home, never go to bed with your sink full of dishes.  Life happens and there can be times that dishes are left in the sink…..it’s ok….what is important is that you go back on track.

Waking up to a clean sink, gives you a positive start to your day.

Step 2 – Getting Dressed to Shoes (Lesson 2 – Dressed to Shoes)

This may sound stupid to some, however if you are a stay at home mum, you can fall into the habit of staying in your PJs.  Having proper shoes on makes gets you motivated.

Step 3 – Baby Steps (Lesson 3 – Baby Steps)

Your home did not get dirty in one day, it took a number of months/years.  Start establishing small routines….make it work for your lifestyle.  Establish a morning routine, after dinner routine and evening routine.  Make them realistic and stick to them. You have 31 days to master these baby steps (31 day beginner babysteps).

Step 4 – Declutter for 15min everyday (Lesson 4 – Decluttering for 15 minutes)

During the 31 days, declutter for 15 minutes.  You cannot start cleaning if you have clutter in the way.  The less you have, the less time you need to spend cleaning.  Once, you have decluttered you can start with zone cleaning.  Decluttering is an ongoing process, so when doing zone cleaning you can continue to declutter.

Step 5 – Take Regular Intervals (Lesson 5 – Take Regular intervals)

Do not overdo it….the Flylady recommends that you take regular intervals of at least 15 minutes.

Step 5 – Flylady 11 Commandments (Lesson 5 – Flyladys’ 11 commandments)

The Flylady has it’s own 11 commandments….do not worry….they are very easy to remember.

Once you have gone through the process you can start zone cleaning.  The zones are the following:

Zone 1: Entrance, front door/area and dining room (I include the backyard in Zone1 – but do it according to your house’s layout);

Zone 2: Kitchen and Pantry;

Zone 3: The Main Bathroom and one extra room;

Zone 4: The Master Bedroom, master bathroom and closet;

Zone 5: The Living room / The Family room.

Do not get discouraged, as long as you keep moving forward there is progress.  Don’t beat yourself if some days you do not manage to do what you had planned….you can do it the next day.
