Moving from one house to another, whether it’s down the road or to another country, can feel overwhelming unless you prepare in advance.  In this blog post I share with you some moving and packing tips.

1. Have a decluttering schedule

Packing items that you no longer need or love will cost you time and money.  Don’t pack everything, with the idea in mind that when you are unpacking you will purge what you don’t need.  It won’t happen…you will be too tired and wanting to settle down that you will end up dumping everything into your cupboards.

Therefore, decluttering before packing is crucial.  Only take items you need and love into your new home.

2. Stock up on boxes

Start looking for boxes such as original boxes of appliances and electronics.  If you are getting home deliveries, hold on to any boxes your produce is delivered in.  Ask family and friends.   It will not only save you money, but also will help you be a step ahead in packing your belongings.

3. Dispose of decluttered items immediately

Schedule a day when your decluttered items will be picked up (if for donation) as soon as possible.  Same applies if you need to dispose of them.  Don’t let them sit there, with the risk of:

  1. Changing your mind or
  2. The movers pick them up by mistake.

4. Take photo of fragile items

It happens that during a move things break, so make sure that you take photos of any fragile / expensive items.  If the mover damages or breaks your belongings during the move, you might need to present photos to sustain a claim and request for compensation.

5. Go round rooms and start packing

You can decluttered, taken the photos but now you need to start packing.  Start room by room, with the room you least use.  So start from the least used room and finish with the most used room.  In each room, start packing those items that you don’t use often, such as occasion glassware and decorative items.

6. Packing fragile items

Make sure that fragile items are packed in bubble wrap, and foam cushioning to avoid breakages.  Also it’s important to use a lot of packing tape for the boxes to be secure.

7. Label your boxes

You want the move to be as seamless as possible, therefore it is important that you label your boxes according to each room and if possible color code them.  I highly recommend that you number your boxes, if for example you have 5 boxes number them 1 of 5, 2 of 5 and so on.  It will be so much easier for the movers and for you to place the boxes into the right room and identify any missing boxes.

8. Pack your clothes the easy way

The easiest way to pack your clothes, is to leave them with the hanger.  Tie together 5 -1o hangers, grab a large bag and insert your clothes leaving the top part of the hanger out.  Secure the top of the bag to the top of the hanger.

9. Pack an overnight bag

Don’t expect that you will unpack everything on the first day, so make sure you have your basic needs available.   If the kids are helping out in the move, make sure you pack enough snacks and water.

10. Be prepared to order take out

Don’t expect to cook dinner on the day of your move.  Be prepared to order take out and take your time to rest for another busy day.
