5 Tips to Declutter your Home

When you get the feeling that you have way too much stuff, feeling anxious and stressed then it’s time to start decluttering.  Decluttering is not a one time thing, but should be done on a regular basis.

In this blog post I will be sharing 5 tips for decluttering your home without feeling overwhelmed.

1. Identify an area that you want to declutter

If you have multiple areas to declutter, don’t try to tackle everything at one go.  Make a plan and choose only one area, whether it’s a drawer, cabinet or chair.  Don’t rush, give yourself time.  Once you are done clean the area and don’t let clutter accumulate again. When you are done using something, put it back in its place.

2. For each item ask 'When did I use it last'?

When you are going through the items, ask yourself when you have used it last.  If you have not used it during the last six months, it’s very unlikely that you will use it in the future.  That is your sign that you should get rid of it.

3. Let you hangers do the work

We all have clothes in our wardrobe that we don’t wear (am not referring here to occasion wear) because we wear 20% of our clothes 80% of the time.  The easiest way to declutter your clothes is to turn the hanger the opposite way every time you wear an item.  Those items that have not been turn, mean that you have not worn them and can easily be donated.

4. Start a 'maybe' box

When you are decluttering, you will encounter items that you can easily get rid off, others that you want to keep and others that you are not sure of.  For those items you are not sure of, create a box and toss everything in.  Put it aside and after 6 months take a note to go through it again.  If there is nothing that you needed then you can easily toss it away.

5. Make sure everything has a home

If something doesn’t have a home, then it’s either time to create a home for it or to let go of it.  If something does not have a home, you will just keep moving it from one place to another and it will always be out of place.  Don’t forget that clutter is caused by failing to put things where they belong.

Decluttering takes time…remember that all the clutter did not happen overnight.  Don’t expect to get rid of the clutter overnight…it’s a work in progress.  However, as you start seeing the benefits you will can the motivation to carry on.
