Is decluttering enough to get organized?

Is decluttering enough to get organized?

These past few years, we have become more aware of the importance to declutter on a regular basis.  However, is decluttering enough to get organized?  Once you declutter, would your space become like it was before after a few weeks?

The answer is simple…YES.

Eventually the space will become cluttered again, unless good organizational systems that work for you and your lifestyle are implemented.

When decluttering, you are only reducing the amount of items owned.  Although it is already a big step towards getting organized, it is not enough. What happens to the items that you decide to keep?  Putting everything back in, without reflecting on what was not working before and implementing systems to fix that, will get the space cluttered again in the blink on an eye.

The next step after decluttering is to organize.

The word organizing is used very lightly.  We think that just because we neatly put back the items, in a neat manner, the space is organized.  It looks better for sure!!

Organizing is about simplifying and make it easy to put items back in place.

Even if you place your items neatly, if to grab something you still need to dig in behind other stuff eventually the space will look again untidy.  WHY?

Because if in a hurry the last thing on your mind would be to put it back in place.   That is how clutter and untidiness forms.

Personally I always recommend that when getting something, your arm does one movement (agreed that sometimes this is not possible particularly in deep cupboards).  However the less the better,

If too many movements are going to happen, I recommend to contain like items in a basket/container.  The reason being that you would only need to take out the basket, get what you need and put it back in.

If you store some of your clothing in a drawer, organizing your sweatshirts on top of each other has become a big no, no for me.  Why?

You cannot see what you have a the bottom of the pile. Therefore to get that item, you are going to remove everything and am pretty sure you will not put back in.

However, organizing your sweatshirts (or anything that can be folded), vertically as if it was a filing system allows you to instantly know what you have and grab the item you need and leaving the rest of the drawer organized.

If folded properly, the other shirts won’t topple over…even if the do, when you put the used item back it will look tidy again without much effort.

To keep you space organized, this isn’t enough.  You need to be mindful of your spending habits.

Your space is what it is…it will not expand…thus buying more stuff will create clutter.

Therefore keeping it SIMPLE is your key to successfully stay organized.
