Make your way through the Village Feast

Summer is in full swing and for us Maltese, this is synonymous with BBQs, sea and village feasts.  In this blog post will chat a bit about the village feast, which for some is everything – they have waited for it all year round, whilst for others it is a total nuisance. For those involved in the organization of the village feasts, the week preceding the feast is the culmination of a year’s work.  Let’s be honest and admit that there is a lot of talent surrounding the village feast…..from the decorations to the musicians.  There is a lot of time involved in the organization and setting up….away from their families.

However, for those not involved in the organization, this time of year can be very frustrating, especially if you are a mother trying to get around with a pushchair.  It is a well-known fact that, our streets are not very pedestrian friendly, but things get worse during the feast with the decorations set up on the pavement.  On the other hand these decorations have to be put somewhere….if not on the pavement, in the street and most likely lose a parking space.  However, in some cases the pavement is so narrow that with the added decoration it is impossible to pass through, thus having to walk in the street.

A possible solution for us parents is to wear our child.  When both my children were babies, I carry them like that and more so with my son……throughout the year because it is not just the village feast that make it difficult to go round, but some shops are not accessible with a pushchair.  There are various ways how to wear your child ……either using a Baby Sling or a Baby Carrier(the baby carrier in the picture has the hip seat).

Back to the village feast, let us all be more considerate towards each other.  If us as parents find alternative ways to carry our children then we should use them.  Let’s find the positive aspects of it….such as the closed streets….let’s take the streets back and allow our children play outside (under our supervision).  On the other hand, feast organizers should be more considerate towards the residents who might not be so keen about the feast.

My advice is to embrace our traditions and enjoy as much as possible the village feast.  It is an opportunity to take our streets back and tick off another activity off the summer bucket list.
