3 Tips you need to know to choose the perfect container

You are excited to start organising, and you need containers but how do you choose the perfect container for your space?  If you have tested with recycled containers for a few months, you should not what works and what doesn’t, but here are some tips to keep in mind when choosing a container.

1. KNOW YOUR STYLE & HABITS

Before rushing out to buy containers, you need to know your style and habits.  Although Pinterest can be a great inspiration to start off, it does not necessarily mean it would work for you.

  • Are you good at putting things away or do you leave them running around?
  • Do you forget about things when you don’t see them?
  • Do you declutter regularly?

If you tend to leave things sitting around, then containers with a lid are not for you.  The lid will be a BARRIER and you still won’t put things away where they belong.

Do you tend to forget about things when you don’t see them?  Then your best bet is see through containers.

If you let things pile up, then again baskets that are see through or wire baskets are better for you.

2. DIMENSIONS OF YOUR SPACE

I have made my fair share of mistakes in this.  Before going out to shop, make sure to take the measurement of your space both in width and in height.  There is nothing more frustrating than coming back home and your container does not fit.

If need be take a measuring tape with you to the store.  Check how many containers would fit onto yourself.  Remember that if containers are not used, then they would turn into clutter.

When containers are square in shape it is easier to take measurements.

3. AESTHATIC

Aesthetics are important when you want to achieve a cohesive look.  When you are still starting the organising journey, it’s ok to have mismatched containers, because you are still in the experimenting phase.  However, once you know what you want it’s important to get same style containers (especially if going into the same space).

Your style and habit will determine whether to opt for clear containers or block colored containers (the kind of baskets is a personal style and the aesthetic look you want to achieve).  For example generally speaking jars are ideal for food that can be emptied into containers, however for those items that cannot be emptied, one may opt for clear bins or a bin that isn’t clear.

Once you grasp thoroughly the above three points then rest assured that your space your remain organized for years to come.  Don’t underestimated each one of them especially knowing your habits.

We tend to be inspired by pictures we see on social media and pinterest, that we forget all about our lifestyle and habits.

Remember, that you don’t necessarily have to use a product according to how it is marketed.  A square container, can be used for different purposes – the determining factor is the material, as obviously you don’t want to put cloth baskets into your fridge.

Hope this has helped you in the your next organisation project!
